Festa della Repubblica

Tuesday, 2 June is the Festa della Repubblica, a National Holiday in Italy.  This day Italians commemorate the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946 in which the people of Italy were called upon to the voting polls to decide what form of government, republic or monarchy, would run their country after World War II and the fall of Fascism.

With a little over 12,700,000 votes, a republican form of government beat out the continuing of the monarchy by 2,000,000 votes.  This forced the male heirs of the House of Savoy into exile.

There is only one way to celebrate this great event. . .

. . . GO TO THE BEACH!!!

We decided to drive to the La Playa area of Catania and park ourselves at the Lido Le Capannine.

Some of our new friends

We were not the only people in Sicily with the same idea.

Laurie getting ready to enjoy the sun and surf

I love a good palapa

A GREAT day for recreation

My purple XXL Speedos should be here any day now.
