Rio Mesa Varsity Gets Their 1st Win of the Season

Our varsity football team has had a very tough season to say the least. After winning Pacific View League championships in 2004 and 2006, as well as being a C.I.F. Semi-Finalist in 2005, we entered Friday night's game with an 0-8, 0-3 PVL record. Our opponents, the home standing Hueneme Vikings were also 0-8, 0-3 in PVL action... something just HAD to give!

This was the view I got upon entering the field while the Junior Varsity game was under way. Our J.V.s blocked a punt and scooped it up for a TD late in the game to salvage a 16-16 tie.

The Spartan J.V.s are now 1-7-1, 1-2-1 in PVL action for the 2008 season.

The Spartan's Defense Digs In!

Tom FitzGerald and his son Jimmy

Tom is a Health teacher at Rio Mesa H.S. as well as being a Spartan alumnus. He is a VERY funny person and a favorite of many of the students including our son Mike who was his Teacher's Assistant in 1993-94.

Rio Mesa's Defensive Coordinator

Mike took over my position when I decided to coach in Italy and work the Freshman team upon my return. He is a GREAT young coach who has his defense running to the ball and hitting with a vengeance. If you watched them, you would never guess that you were watching a winless team. He has gotten the kids to play hard all year long despite the losses, the sign of a great coach!

Man Coverage at Cornerback

The Final Score was 10-7 in favor of Rio Mesa! I was happy to see one of Rio Mesa's long standing traditions, a fake punt from our own 5 yard line, be the key play that kept the winning drive alive with a 23 yard pickup. This pass by Enrique Thomas led to the winning TD being scored late in the 4th period.

The Spartans are now 1-8, 1-3 in the PVL.

At long last there WAS joy in Sparta this evening!!!
